I am personally believe in starting my day with some movements; yoga or running, followed by a tall hydrating smoothie, yoghurt or bowl. I have a lot of different recieps, but mango smoothie is one of my favorites. Starting your day like this is going to give your insides a morning rinse, your metabolism a kick start, hydrate your cells and curb cravings witch naturally prepare you to make food choice that will support a healthy gut.

Want better gut health?

So much about overall good health starts with a happy gut. Good digestion is the key to our health. The Happiness is dependent on our gut micro biome, the ecosystem of beneficial bacteria that resides throughout our gastrointestinal tract. Food is also medicine when it comes to gut health. If your Agni (digestive fire) is strong, you will feel light, nourished, and clean after a meal, and have no fatigue, heaviness, fullness, or indigestions.

Our micro biome is made of organisms such as bacteria, fungi, yeasts and surprisingly viruses, which help to fight other pathogenic bacteria in our gut. I think the mango fruit are just amazing! We have probably eaten at least four mangos a day during the season. They are delicious and in some parts of the world, mango (Mangifera indica) is called the “king of fruits”. This fruit is not only delicious and have a amazing color but also boasts an impressive nutritional profile, nutrients to health benefits, such as improved immunity, digestive health, low in calories but full of nutrients! Mango is a food source of immune-boosting nutrients.

How do you make a glowing mango and papaya smoothie?

Guys, it´s the easiest ever. Combine mango, papaya, turmeric and banana + almond milk. Remember, fresh fruit should be eaten promptly because it oxidizes.

  • 2 fresh mangoes or 2 cups of frozen mango
  • 6-8 bits fresh papaya or 1 cups of frozen papaya
  • 1 frozen banana, can use unfrozen if using frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup milk, dairy or dairy-free
  • 1/2 table spoon of turmeric

Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend until creamy. This Healthy Mango Smoothie is gluten-free, diary-free, vegan and delicious!

Yacht traveling for me always conjured up the image of a yacht anchored in the middle of nowhere surrounded by beautiful landscapes. But the reality is slightly different yacht owners also explore remote locations that are far to reach by land, as well as other with plenty of culture and sites to see.

The South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach fairly glitters and is just a fun place to be. Enjoy the historic pastel-hued Art Deco architecture, the most iconic street Ocean Drive, fancy cars and all types of dinning.

The Art Deco style that is present on Ocean Drive today was influenced by the 1924 Paris Expositon des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. A lot of Mayan and Egyptian motifs were used along with clean lines an geometric patterns. South Beach took it to the next level by adding nautical and tropical designs from nature as well.

Locations in Miami can be very touristy and may not truly represent the essence of the city. There is a lot to do in Miami Beach and best way to discern is to follow the locals. There are some great venues that locals visit that represent the true Miami and South Beach.

Pure Vida was created by husband and wife to serve  as a place for friends to gather, eat delicious food and be surrounded  in comfort of home. The food is healthy and delicious, my husband and I love this place! They create a menu that includes organic bowls, breakfast, bagels, salads, wraps, smoothies, cakes and cookies. The menu can be eaten any time of the day. Pure Vida has become a community of people who value quality and health.

Planta is a innovative plant-based restaurant in South Beach inspired by all parts of the world, founded in 2016. The restaurant is a epic plant-based bash that uses high-quality ingredients from ethical suppliers. Planta has great atmosphere, decor, vibe and offers the wonderful vegan food, simply delicious. My husband and I came here for dinner a couple of times and got a number of different tasty dishes. Our favorites were the vegan nigiri 5.75, maki rolls 15, spring rolls and soft serve vegan ice cream.

Wynwood, Miami´s art & soul

Wynwood is a living neighborhood paced with art, culture, and innovation. The former warehouse district  of Wynewood has become the arts hub of South Florida. It started with murals, street art, and graffiti, by the neighborhood´s early developers, sparing vibrant spaces teeming with outdoor art. Today, there are more than 70 galleries and museums, dozens of new restaurants and bars, and hundreds of creatures, and innovators working in a place that just feels alive. There is plenty top see, and we love just walking in the streets and explore and feel the culture.

Yoga practice in South Beach

When visiting South Beach I had the pleasure to practice with Kino MacGregor, Miami Mysore Style Ashtanga Retreat at Miami Life Center. The center is dedicated to the study of Yoga in the lineage of Pattabhi Jois. The Ashtanga Yoga´s Vinyasa system is sequences of postures that vary in difficulty and benefit.

I love this place and to practice in small group, that allows you to truly dive deeply into the yoga practice. It was truly an honor to meet all of the beautiful people joined the retreat and be a part of the journey along this yogic path.

Sharat Jois Tour, Miami

Ashtanga yoga is not a style of yoga, it is a method to explore something far more than handstands. I am so grateful that I had the possibility to learn this method directly from the lineage holder of Asthange Yoga while he was teaching in Miami.

Ever since I could remember I fantasized with the beach and the sand between my toes. All I want to do is to be surrounded by down to earth, happy & positive people. People who realize that it is the little things that truly matter. Sharing a tea with a friend, or a healthy smoothie after a yoga practice or sunny day at the beach. South beach in Miami offers it all!

Miami´s beaches are famously flat and calm, and rank among the finest stretches of shoreline in the nation. I am soaking up every ray of sunshine and letting each wave of crystal clear water nourish my mind and body.

I want to bottle this feeling and carry it around in my heart for ever.

 

 

What is it really like to live on a sailboat?

Living on a sailing boat is a different life. When my husband and I planned to sail away, we had a vague idea of what living on a sailboat would be like, but not what it´s really like to live on a sail boat. While there are many reasons why I love living on a sailboat. It also has its challenges. It´s not all wine and grapes and sailing into a beautiful sunset. Living on a sail boat is often windy, a lot of hard work and it means intense lack of space and long between each time we meet family and friends.

We have had challenging days! In periodes we have experienced a lot of wind, high waves and thunderstorms. We´ve been through a storm at anchor, when another boat nearly crashed until us. Life on the sea also means to feel fear, taking charge of your safety, and spending some sleepless nights to take care of each other and make sure your boat is securely anchored.

What about the fear for long passages, when sailing at night, of looking out and not seeing land, maybe for days?

Before doing a long passage or a night sail, I only had experience of costal navigation. We usually sailed using line of sight and frequented the same marinas or anchoring places along the Scandinavian coastline for years. However, since buying Summer Wind things have changed, and you don´t know how you´ll feel until you do things. We have sailed Summer Wind from Sag Harbor in Long Iland, New York to Forte Lauderdale, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, (Haiti, Cuba) and Miami. The last year we have sailed from Forte Lauderdale to Bahamas, Miami to Bermuda. Then in the months of May we crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Azores and sail from Azores to Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain. Actually, most of the time I have felt peaceful. The whole experience felt liberating and I have enjoyed sailing long leg, day and night. Except the Atlantic crossing and the long leg from Domenican Republic to Miami and Azores to Lisboa. At this stages friends have had the opportunity to join Ståle and Summer Wind. Yes, I wonder all the time what´s under the boat. There are loads of whales in the ocean and sometimes they are right below us and one night our boat hit a whale. That went well but was a scary experience! We have experienced sailing at night into fishing nets. The boat quickly stopped, sails had to be lowered and fishing nets picked up and cut, not easy to handle in the dark of night.

What does one do to keep busy when living on a boat?

I never thought we´d be so busy. Sometimes it´s much harder for yourself as a human to do normal human things, when you live on a sailboat. The daily life can be a multi-hour to full-day event depending how far you are from civilization. Getting food or water, cleaning your laundry, moving the yacht from one place to another (often long distances), preform the necessary maintenance and repairs on the boat. It´s amazing how long it takes to do a simple task such as filling the water tanks or walking into town to get groceries.

When we bought our first sailing boat 14 years ago I had no idea that taking care of a boat was that much work! When I´m not cleaning the inside of the boat, the outside always needs some attention, clean the teak, wash the windows, get the rust of the metal work and polish the hull. Whenever we enter a marina we often spend hours maintenance the boat, refresh the boat and get the salt water off.

My experience is that it is necessary to be handy! I´m so grateful that Ståle knows how to fix almost everything. It seems like boats need endless attention and maintenance; care of any mechanical electrical, rigging, self steering, toilet, water pump, holding tank, any other system that breaks – or maintenance so that no damage occurs.

What about the sloping floors and all the waves?

Then there is the rocking. You have to make sure everything is stowed away before you sail. The waves and wakes when sailing and sometimes on anchor mess with you. Maybe you get seasick. Luckily, we have been able to handle the movement for most of the time. The small swells that turned into long, rolling ones hit from the back, sometimes make the stomach balled and we have to concentrate on breathing and staring at the horizon. A good night sleep is never taken for granted. High winds, swell, other boats anchored too close, waves crashing on our hull, irrational fear of dragging and sometimes hight music from the promenade or other boats nearby is a part of the boat life.

What about the space, considerably less space than in the house with garden we moved from in Oslo to year ago?

Sailing boats are designed to be multi-use spaces, to fit everything in small places, witch is really cool when you´re first looking at buying one. Then you start spending time on it, and you find out that simple living is preferable.

The boat is 55 feet, but that dosen´t mean there´s a ton of storage, space on it. Many of the lockers are crammed with tools, sails, fenders and rope of various types. We have shelves for books, towels, linen, food, pots and pans, and some lockers for sailing clothing and a select numbers of clothes.

You have to be careful with how much water and electricity you´re using. You learn to pay attentions to the environment and to simplifying your life by reducing your waste. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to tell more about my experience on the topic later.

A big deal about living in a really small space for a long period of time is that you have to really like and get along well with your partner!

I feel that it has been an advantage for us that we have been together almost the whole life. Another important part is that we both had our home office before we went on the trip and were used to spending a lot of time together.

How do you keep your brain engaged in a business like manor living on a sail boat?

Before we went on the tour, Ståle graduate to be a captain, the Captain Coast skipper exam. Every day and night he is learning by doing and my experience is that he is a confident and brilliant captain. Furthermore, I am still studying and practicing yoga and have attended several yoga event along the way and expanding my network of people interested in health.

We read a lot of books and articles, spend time updating our geography, history and politics knowledge with is relevant for the next experience. We´re always meeting new people – discusses and acquires new knowledge, going on amazing adventures, keeps us updated on sea life (different from Atlantic Ocean to Med), high and low tids, all technology on board (maps, navigators systems, water maker, generator) and custom clearance routines and laws.

Some hobbies we´ve picked up while sailing and being disconnected from technology is to spend even more time together!

Sailing and even more sailing, snorkling, hikes, reading, yoga, eating, writing, fishing, taking pictures, sup-padling, lisen to music and creating awesome new recipes and meals. It maybe surprising to realize that happiness is available for you at every moment!

Making plans when sailing is very difficult. The weather, wind and boat maintenance influence our daily decisions. Living on a sail boat requires its patience. Our plan is to keep going while it´s fun. We headed to the Mediterranean in July and we don´t know what the future holds, but that´s what makes life even more adventurous. I don´t think living on a sailboat is for everyone, but right now the good outweighs the bad parts. Living this lifestyle provides endless amounts of simplicity and freedom. You are forced to get outside no matter how the weather is. You don´t miss a sunset, full moon, rainbow or a thunderstorm.

We both like having options when it comes to life, and with sailboat living the potential for adventure is endless. I love the idea of being able to move our home around to explore distant part. There are numerous destinations to visit, explore, discover, learn, share and ignite childlike wonderment. It´s always an event happening, from the live aboard happy hour, to yoga classes, be out in the nature and learning more about sailing, reading books, traveling to new places, making new friends.

So grateful for this life.

The world is beautiful in Eleuthera!

The sailing vessel Summer Wind and her crew has been discover the tiny island Eleuthera in the Bahamas. IMG_4823.jpgIf a slower paced, off-the-beaten path trip is what you ŕe looking for, the bohemian vibes of Eleuthera could be the paradise you´re looking for. This is the place to completely unwind and disconnect! Eleuthera define The Bahamas with endless pineapple fields, pink and white sand beaches to secluded coves and miles of coastlines.IMG_5139Eleuthera´s sleepy island “capital” Governor´s Harbour overlooks a broad and handsome harbor, it has some faded architectural reminders of its official stature. Much of the architecture and way of life was influenced by British Loyalists who settled here in the 1700s. This style has since been adopted by others Bahamian islands.IMG_4857IMG_5036IMG_5035The Eleuthera charm us with  approximately 11000 residents. The people who live here either fish for country of farm the rolling across of pineapple plantations. IMG_4871IMG_4870IMG_4868IMG_4874IMG_4888Island Farm was my favorite place on the island to shop for food as they grow everything themselves organically on their farm. They have the most amazing fresh fruits and vegetables, with is so hard to find on the island as everything is imported. They have beautiful looking kale, so many varieties of greens, herbs and amazing fresh fruits and vegetables. They also sell their own delicious homemade Bahamian sauces, pesto from home-grown cilantro, and salsa. Island Farm also bake hot cinnamon rolls and bread twice per week. IMG_5867IMG_5870IMG_5871IMG_5876Most of our stay we cooked delicious fresh food on the boat or eat on the beach.IMG_5868IMG_4841Snorkling on Eleuthera is a fantastic way to experience a colorful, living adventure! The rough-stone entrance to this miles-long cave is between Gregory Town and Alice Town, on the southwestern side of the Queen´s Hwy. Several chambers bear charcoal signatures dating back to the mid-19th center, and there are some impressive stalagmites and stalactites.IMG_5080IMG_5081IMG_5084IMG_5087Lovely Eleuthera also harbors boutique hotels, revered surf breaks and some tasty restaurants and small coffee bars.IMG_4909IMG_4911IMG_4910 Eleuthera is generally a very isolated island of casual sophistication, weep-developed resorts, rocky bluffs, low-lying wetlands and massive coral reefs that create magnificent backdrops. For lovers of white sand beaches and easy-going life there may be no better place to explore than lovely, Eleuthera.

The cat-cow pose is a great tension release for the pelvis and lumbar spine and a calming pose.

Moves:

The cat-cow pose (Marjariasana) increase circulation in and around spine, upper back and shoulders. The cat-cow pose also strengthens muscles of the chest, core, shoulders and arms.

Stand on all fours and align knees hip-width apart and stack them directly under the hip joints. Align wrists shoulder-width apart and stacked directly under the shoulders, or slightly forward. Ground the weight through both knees and both palms, end evenly throughout each hand.

Turn inside, slowly inhale, exhale, then:

Cow: Inhale and curl the toes, press the hands down and gently stretch the chest and sternum forward creating a forward arch in the upper back.

Cat: Exhale and gently round the spine like a cat. The tailbone curls toward the floor and the spine rounds.

Let the breath move you through this sequence and repeat 3-6 times or as needed.

Rest well.

Why eat clean?

The health is a constant subject that each and everyone of us is addressed with on a daily basis whether we are conscious of it or not. Good nutrition – an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity is an cornerstone of good health.

Each day we make choices in what we let enter our mouth

The intake of food, considered in relation to the body´s dietary needs. Every bite is a new opportunity to feel healthier and happier. This is about healing, revitalizing and restoring our bodies from inside and out. Food is medicine, nourishing our mind, bodies and moods. Prevention of disease through food and movement is the most powerful option we have. The understanding that each body is unique and thus has a unique path to optimal health. Knowledge is important but at the end of the day, you need to be the driver of your own vehicle. We are all different and therefore, it is important to listen to the body and become an expert on our personal health.

Generally, eating clean means avoiding packaged and processed foods and eating foods as close to its natural state as possible. The majority of food in a clean food diet should be fresh (avoid items that come in containers; bag, box and package) and free from additives as preservatives, artificial sweeteners and food coloring. Whole fruit is encouraged, avoid foods with added sugar and refined grains. If the clean food diet includes eating meat, lean varieties is chosen, such as skinless chicken, turkey and fish. Consistently eating clean food fills your body with plentiful vitamins and minerals, high-quality protein and healthy fats, which improve heart and brain health, assist with weight management, build a stronger immune system and increase energy levels, among other benefits.

The act of choosing plant first is going to do a number on you mentally in a every positive way. When you eat clean, your body will tell you what is needs and warns you when you are eating something it does not agree with. The benefits from adapting plant based lifestyle is improved digestion, clearer skin, whiter eyes, shinier hair, stronger nails, weight loss, muscle tone, heightened mental clarity, hormon balance and a feeling of stability.

There are choices

You choose. Think about a craving. You just got home from work and the energy is low. The quickest way to boost dopamine is to eat sweet foods, or taking a glas of vin. Cravings have a shape – they build, they crest and then they fade away. We often reach for whatever it is we have learned will make us temporarily feel better. The brain stores that pattern as information. It is a learned response an emotional experience. It is a message telling you that you want to feel better. Notice if the root is stress, pressure, sadness, or hurt? Cravings tend last some where between 3 and 10 minutes. Next time, try to address the cravings before you reach for something to calm you. This is about understanding the effect food has on your mind and, in turn, your body and vice versa.

Personally, I find freedom and well-being through a holistic and plant-based lifestyle, based on fresh fruits and vegetables and sometimes some fresh seafood, chicken and turkey. Many of us walk around in a constant state of bloating or inflammation of the gut, however we rarely recognize it as such. When you eat food that nourish the body and abundance of fresh, nutrient dense plant-based food, the digestive system can work efficiently and more energy can be spent on repair.

The idea is to aim for balance in all aspects of life which are meant to benefit you and also the health of our planet. According to a new comprehensive overview (by Joseph Poore from Oxford University, Science), we can reduce the world’s agricultural area by 75% and CO2-emissions from agriculture by 50% by growing grain and vegetables instead of keeping animals. 15% of large-scale meat producers release 1.3 billion tonnes of CO2 and use an agricultural area on the size of China!

By getting in touch with your internal dialogue, you will find the space that give you the information on what the body is feeling and what it needs.

Eating clean regularly, in season and hang on to it, and you will feel more healthy!

 

 

 

The Journey 2018

Maybe the journey isn´t so much about becoming anything, maybe it´s about un-becoming everything that was never really you to begin with, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place?

This is me full of presence pleasure. Thankfulness finds it´full measure in generosity of presence, both through participation and witness.

I would repeat this entire year again, every last thing, as hard and deconstructing and beautiful as it´s been, to be where I am today.

When you say yes to something, you say no to something else. How can we refine the time and priorities to create a whole life?

Letting go is hard, but holding on is hard too. If something feels off, it is. There´s a part of you that knows. Maybe you will be grateful that things didn’t work out the way you once wanted them to?

Attachment often leads to suffering. Attachment to people and things, to place and time, to ideas and desire. Attachment to expectations and relations. When you lean in, release and show up anyway and knowing that everything ends. When we stop grasping for anything outside of ourselves to fulfill us there is more room for gratitude, for freedom and love in all the unexpected ways that would never be relevant had we not let go.

Thank you 2018 for holding space – the space to showing up for each other gives us an untouchable feeling of connection, of being seen and seeing. Take a Break

Turn inside, breath, feel the heart and just let it all go.

Download music, take a break:

  1. “Breathe” by Elephant Revival, Break in the Clouds.

Moves:

Child pose is a nice forward fold. This pose is a great tension release for the pelvis and lumbar spine and a calming pose.

Sit on your heels, allowing the belly and chest to round forward onto the thighs. Let the forehead rest toward or on the floor. Close the eyes. Find your breath and rest for a while.

Alternatives/options:

  • Rest your arms down by your sides, and let the palms face down, or stack them like a pillow under your forehead.
  • Support the lower back and the pressure on the knees by resting on a bolster.
  • If the neck, shoulders or knees are too sensitive is to do Apanasana. From a seated position, lay down on the floor/mat. Rest on your back and hugging the knees.

Stay in pose for 1-3 minutes.

Breath & Enjoy!

Take some minutes to clean your head and release.

Breath is a life force and the breath is a gift to softening the body, and when practice pranayama (breath) correctly, the mind is automatically stilled.

The Full Complete Breath is a grate tool for us to connect enhances the mind-body connection. As a little child, we breathed full, complete breaths, so we can all find our way back there again. The Full Complete Breath consists of four components; inhalation, pause, exhalation, pause. The diaphragm lowers as we inhale, so the lungs can expand. The intercostals (muscles in between the ribs) expand and lift the ribcage, and the entire circumference of the abdomen expands. On exhale the abdomen relaxes, the belly draws in, and the diaphragm releases back up into the chest as a second set of intercostal muscles contracts and returns the rib cage to its starting position.

Begin by sitting on the floor/mat with equal weight in both sitting bones. Slightly elevated on a cushion or rolled up blanket, lengthening your spine and placing your head back on top of your shoulders. Your feet are placed in front of each other (in front of the pelvis), your knees are spread wide and resting down on the floor. Place your hands palms down on your thighs or towards your knees. Close your eyes, allow all your muscles in your face to relax, and your tongue to float freely.

Alternatives/options:

You can place a cushion or pillow under your sitting bones, to prevent pressing the weight back into the buttocks, which presses on the sciatic notch and can cause or aggravate sciatica.

You can place pillows under the thighs for added support if you have a tight groin or sensitive knees.

Get the attention towards the breath and remember that we don´t use our body to get into a pose, but we use the pose to get into our body.

Seated pranayama for 3-5 minutes.
